Student profile: Todd Fuller

Todd Fuller, 20, is in his third year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the National Art School, but five years ago he was a Year 12 student wondering what to do after finishing high school. According to Todd, his art teacher encouraged him to apply for the HSC Intensive Studio Practice, and he has never looked back. “I love it,” he says, “I wouldn’t want to not be here.”

Todd finished high school was thinking about studying at the University of Newcastle, staying close to his family and friends. But the HSC Intensive program gave him the confidence he needed to apply for to study Fine Arts. “I didn’t think I was good enough before I came on the HSC,” he says. “I was thrilled when I got accepted here! Everyone who is anyone has come through the National Art School, and just to get a place was amazing.” Was he worried about moving away from home? “It was a big adventure, moving to another city, meeting new people and making new friends.”

Todd says that his experiences on the HSC convinced him to study art after leaving high school. “The tutors were amazing. We had one project over the two weeks and had to work on it at home. But the tutor stayed in touch throughout to help us out and give us advice. It felt like she took us on as a mentor as well as a teacher.” Even a midnight fire drill couldn’t dampen his spirits. “I was a boarder, and one night we were all evacuated when the fire alarm went off,” he says. They were all back in school the next day with a story to tell. “I spent the evenings talking to people from Goulburn and Wagga and all over the place,” he says. “I’m still in touch with friends I made on the HSC course now.”

Since studying the HSC, Todd has done so much that he finds it hard to pick his greatest achievement so far. “That’s a tough one,” he says. “I worked with a children’s education company while I was studying. I was up on stage in front of hundreds of kids teaching them how to draw cartoon characters or paint scenery. It was really rewarding.” And that’s not all: “Exhibiting with Gosford’s Regional Gallery and Newcastle’s Back to Back Gallery is up there as well.” Todd plans to move north when he graduates, and wants to start up his own art school. “I’ve always loved art, and I’ve always loved education. I’d like to combine those two.”

Now in his final year, Todd’s major is Sculpture, though he says he is focused on drawing too. “I’m not just a sculptor: I’m an artist. Drawing runs through everything here and I do a lot of it! When I started the HSC Intensive Studio Practice I studied painting and in the first year of my degree I spent three weeks at a time doing a bit of everything. I was exhausted by the end of the year, but I had so much fun it flew by.” Would he have been here without the HSC Intensive program? “Probably not,” he says. “Don’t ever think you aren’t good enough: you’ll be amazed at what you can do. The HSC Intensive Studio Practice will take you places you never thought you could go.”

Todd Fuller was studied painting on the HSC Intensive Studio Practice program in 2005, and is now a full-time third-year student on the National Art School's Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Todd was speaking to Paul Wild.
